This summer, four members of our SSTC team of Cambodian dysphagia clinicians and speech therapist supervisors participated in a 16-hour virtual FEES course (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow) led by Dr. Susan Langmore, who offered her course free of charge to our clinicians in Cambodia. Dr. Langmore developed the FEES procedure in 1988. Since then, FEES has become an internationally recognized gold standard for dysphagia evaluation and management.
In cases such as stroke, when persons may experience swallowing problems (dysphagia), FEES uses a nasal endoscope to assess whether the swallow is normal or impaired. If there is a swallowing problem, FEES helps determine what the swallowing problem might be, and how it might be remediated for safe intake of food and drink.
Thank you Dr. Langmore for the four times you came personally to Cambodia as a volunteer to train us, and for your ongoing generous support of SSTC!
