In many countries, speech therapy is a professional field where speech-language pathologists (SLPs) assess and treat children and adults with speech, language, and swallowing problems. In Cambodia today, there is no profession of speech therapy to manage these conditions effectively.
Our mission at Speech Therapy Cambodia is to provide world-class training and clinical supervision in speech-language pathology, with a focus on dysphagia evaluation and treatment, so that Cambodians experiencing swallowing disorders receive the care they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives.
Dysphagia affects more than half of stroke victims. Since dysphagia patients have trouble swallowing food and drinks, they are at risk of malnutrition, life-threatening lung infections, and social isolation. By training healthcare professionals and working with hospitals and clinics, we are improving the dysphagia services available to their patients.
Building Cambodia’s Speech Therapy Profession
Our long-term vision is to make effective speech, language and swallowing therapies easily accessible to all Cambodians through their healthcare services by establishing speech therapy as profession in Cambodia.
Along with our Cambodian partner-NGO Speech and Swallowing Therapy Cambodia (SSTC), and other like-minded organizations, we are working to introduce these professional skills and services into the Cambodian healthcare and education systems.
In 2023, Speech Therapy Cambodia and the University of Puthisastra launched Cambodia’s first certificate program focused on dysphagia management.
This is a landmark step towards promoting the education and certification of Cambodian Speech-Language Pathologists in Cambodia.
